Baccarat is an easy game to follow but there is also a lot of baccarat terms that comes with the game. It means players who are less well-versed with the game may justifiably feel intimated by these terms in Baccarat.

In this article we'll be covering common Baccarat terms & their definitions to make it easier for you to play online Baccarat.

If there’s something you don’t understand in Baccarat then make sure to check out our article on how to play baccarat & the rules of baccarat.

First of all, let’s just go over a quick overview of the rules of Baccarat, to remind you of how the game is played.

Rules of Baccarat

In Baccarat, you will sit at a table in the Unibet Live Casino and choose to bet on three options: Player, Banker or Tie. Once you have placed a bet, you will be dealt two cards along with the dealer. The cards are turned over and added together, with the left-hand digit of your hand rubbed out. The winning hand is the one that is closest to 9.

Example: You bet $5 on the Player. The cards are dealt and the Player’s hand is 3S, 5C = 8. The Banker’s hand is 10D, 7H = 7. You win the Player bet and double your money!

But now, let’s take a look at some common Baccarat terms…

Baccarat

This is not only the name of the game but a word for cards or hands worth 0 points. These cards are 10, J, Q and K. They are worth zero points because the cards are actually worth 10 points, but in Baccarat you delete the left-hand digit to leave only the right-hand one.

Banker Bet

This is a bet on the Banker hand winning the game. In this bet, you select the chips you want to stake and then click on the Banker area of the Baccarat table. The bet will be placed and is made before the cards are dealt. If the Banker’s hand beats the Player’s hand, you win the bet. The Banker bet pays out slightly less than 1:1.

Deal

This is when the Player and Banker receive their cards. The dealer will deal two cards each to the Player and the Banker. Those cards are then turned over. A third card can be dealt to both hands if the rules allow it. See below for details on the Baccarat third card.

Hand value

This is simply the accumulated score that your cards possess. Cards worth 2 to 9 have a value assigned to them already. An ace is worth 1, while 10, J, Q and K are worth 0. This is because in Baccarat you delete the left-hand digit when you have values over 9. Your hand value is the total sum of your two (or sometimes three) cards, with the right-hand digit deleted.

Example: You are dealt a King and a 7. Your hand is therefore worth 0 + 7 = 7.

Face value

The value of each individual card that you add up to get your hand value. The face values are as follows:

Ace - 1

2 to 9 - Their relative values

10 to K - 0

Natural

This is a term for the best possible score in Baccarat, which is 9. It can also represent 8. The aim of the game is to hope the hand you bet on is either a Natural or closest to 9 as possible.

Punto Banco

The name of the most popular version of Baccarat and the one this guide is based upon. Punto Banco simply means Player Bank. It described the basis of the game, which is where you either bet on the Player hand or the Banker hand winning.

Player Bet

This is a bet on the Player hand winning the game. In this bet, you select the chips you want to stake and then click on the Player area of the Baccarat table. The bet will be placed and is made before the cards are dealt. If the Player’s hand beats the Banker’s hand, you win the bet. The Player bet pays out at 1:1.

Side Bets

You can also make side bets in some of the Baccarat tables in the Live Casino. Here is a list of the side bets available:

Player Pair - Pays if the first two cards to the Player is a pair

Banker Pair - Pays if the first two cards to the Banker is a pair

Perfect Pair - Pays 25:1 if two identical cards are dealt to either Banker or Player. Pays 200:1 if this happens to both Banker and Player

Either Pair - Pays if either the Banker or Player has a pair

Player Bonus - Pays when the Player wins on a natural 8 or 9 or by at least four points

Banker Bonus - Pays when the Banker wins on a natural 8 or 9 or by at least four points

Squeeze

This is part of Squeeze Baccarat that is available as a game in the Unibet Live Casino. Here, the manner in which the dealer reveals cards depends on bets that have been placed. The dealer will quickly reveals cards for the hans with the fewer total bets, and will squeeze the cards dealt to the other hand. This adds to the tension as you wait for the cards to be revealed!

Third card

This is when a third card is required to settle the game. The third card is an automatic card that is dealt to the player if they require it. Below are the rules for the third card…

Player has 0 to 5 = Third card must be drawn

Player has 6 or 7 = Player must stand

Player has 8 or 9 = This is a ‘natural’ and both hands stand

If the player’s hand receives a third card then the banker’s hand will receive a third card if…

Banker has 0 to 2 = Third card must be drawn

Banker has 3 to 6 = Either draws third card or stands, depending on player’s third card

Banker has 7 = Banker must stand

Banker has 8 or 9 = This is a ‘natural’ and both hands stand

Tie bet (stand-off)

This is a bet on the Tie, where both hands finish on the same value. In this bet, you select the chips you want to stake and then click on the Tie area of the Baccarat table. The bet will be placed and is made before the cards are dealt. If the Player’s hand matches the Banker’s hand - even after additional cards are drawn - you win the bet. The Tie bet pays out at 8:1 or 9:1. It is not recommended for newcomers to the game to place a Tie bet, as it is far riskier than the Player bet or the Banker bet.
